Eat mor chikin. Read more Bible.

You have undoubtedly heard of the raging controversy over Chick-fil-A and its traditional marriage beliefs. Traditional marriage (one man + one woman) versus homosexuality/same-sex marriage is obviously not a new idea on the table of political pile-ups. It comes as no surprise to me that liberal politicians and flocks of gay and lesbian activists would stand to exercise their right to free speech while slobbering all over the same rights of another man – a man who uses his right to free speech to glorify the God he serves. This isn’t because I’m fundamental and conservative in my beliefs and actions. It’s because I can see the real problem. Really, do you think the existence of a popular chicken sandwich causes the followers of same-sex movements to quack? What gets these people so riled up? Really, the problem doesn’t sit with differing opinions. It sits on the balance with God on one side and humans on the other. Reality is, people can never outweigh the truth of God. With some people, this doesn’t sit too well, so the only option is to fight it. We seem to forget that we’re only a small part of creation made by God. What power do we have to fight our Creator? Maybe it’s all God’s fault. Yeah, right. You can’t tell me that because of God, these issues labeled under the category “political” exist. I am becoming increasingly aware of the fact that many people are blaming God for the conditions of mankind. Let’s all ask this question: Is God to blame?  Let’s take a deeper look into answering that question.

Many people would argue that homosexuality is a condition that people have at birth. They can’t help it and they don’t fight it. They were born that way. Let them be, right? I’ve seen the world defend this idea and beat it to a pulp in debates and newscasts that stretch on for hours and hours. I’m not surprised at these people doing such things. Reality is, they need the Lord. They are unsaved. They do not know the real truth. Half of the reason is because they are too busy fighting it to bother with examining the depth of truth found in the Bible. That doesn’t shake me. People who refuse truth must accept it or they will never really understand what they fight for… or against. What bothers me the most is a person who claims to be a follower of truth or a believer in Christ and fights for the superiority of humans, whether that be in a gay/lesbian movement or otherwise.

Recently, I have seen even Christians begin to offer a degree of tolerance for such acts. My mind screams, “Whoa, STOP!” because… don’t you know what the Bible teaches us? In several passages (Leviticus 20:13, Leviticus 18:22-24, Romans 1:26-27), the Bible tells us that homosexuality is a definite sin and is punishable. And before I move on, understand that sin is sin, no matter how you spin it. For example, a lie and a murder are two opposite acts, but are equally sinful.

I’ve had people  (even Christians) come to me and ask the following question: “Why would God deem homosexuality a sin while He creates people with a natural desire towards the same sex?”

First of all, God’s reputation is in no way based upon the tendencies or choices of mankind. The Lord deemed sin as sin in the very beginning. He set a standard of right and wrong and created each human with a free will to choose between the two. Right up front, that question suggests that God is flawed in some way or another. Either He does not know what He is doing, He can’t control His creation, or He contradicted His own word in the scriptures. Based on this, He must be ignorant, helpless and contradicting. Dear Christian, is this the God you chose to serve? I think we need to examine what the Bible says. Psalm 18:30a – As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. Matthew 5:48 – Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. That sounds more like my God.

Secondly, this argument places creation over the Creator. Here’s the thinking: As humans, we have the right to exercise our own decisions and live by what we deem right. Dear human, when will you allow yourself to see truth? What real rights do we have that we were not given? Not given by our founding fathers or by rulers above us. By God. We were created by God. Genesis 1:26 – Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” That’s it, right there. Our existence and privileges were granted to us by God’s choice of making it all happen. But, oh, there’s that question again! If God made us and we turned out like this, didn’t He do something wrong?

Did we ever do anything right? Wasn’t it man who sinned in the Garden of Eden? Wasn’t it a human who broke pure fellowship with God? From the very beginning, God set standards. He told mankind that sin is punishable by separation from Him. Adam and Eve broke that standard first by committing the first sin (Genesis 3). From that point on, God set an eternal punishment of separation over breaking His laws. But He didn’t leave us without a remedy for our sins. He sent His perfect son Jesus to die for the sins of mankind and to offer us a choice (John 3:16). We don’t have to remain blind to the truth that God has set before us in His Word – the Bible. But our heavenly Father knows that some of us will refuse this truth. He knows that His creation will abhor Him. Those of us that accept God’s truth are certainly a minority. That is why we must fight for truth.

Do I need to run to the doors of Chick-fil-A, buy a crispy chicken sandwich and an iced tea to show my support of traditional marriage? Not necessarily. But we do need to stand for truth. We must stand with those who stand for God. We must be defenders of God’s truth. I am proud of the Cathy family and their values that rest between the pages of the Bible.

The Bible stands like a mountain towering
Far above the works of men;
Its truth by none ever was refuted,
And destroy it they never can.

The Bible stands though the hills may tumble,
It will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble;
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation, For the Bible stands.
– The Bible Stands

From Ephesians 6:
“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…”
